The Leviathan was an Interdictor-class Cruiser that was the flagship of Darth Malak's Sith fleet 3,956 years prior to the Battle of Yavin. Its captain was Admiral Saul Karath. As with the other capital ships of the Sith fleet, the Leviathan was originally a Galactic Republic ship that fell into Sith hands after the Battle of Malachor V. Apparently a distant technological ancestor of the later Star Destroyers, Leviathan was one of many similarly designed ships commissioned by the Republic for the Mandalorian Wars.

The class name "Interdictor" was first proposed by Admiral Jimas Veltraa. When Veltraa was killed in the Mandalorian Wars, some proposed that the name of the class be changed to honor him, but this was overruled by the Supreme Chancellor. 3,963 years before the Battle of Yavin, construction on the Interdictor-class was approved.

Many of the original Interdictors were manufactured by Republic Sienar Systems. Like the Inexpugnable-class command ships, the Interdictor-class cruisers were built at Corellian shipyards, though many more would be constructed by the Star Forge to fuel the growing warfleet of the Sith Lord Darth Revan.

The Interdictor-class Cruiser was 600 meters long and featured a hull that split into two structures, one dorsal and one vertical. The ship was propelled by three main thrusters and four auxiliary thrusters, similar to the Imperial-class Star Destroyer. Each ship was commanded from a sternward tower.

The Leviathan was capable of wrenching ships out of hyperspace with the use of its four gigantic gravity-well projectors which could trap nearby vessels in realspace. While primitive by later standards, it was the pinnacle of interdiction technology in its time. It was also equipped with 20 quad laser cannons, a tractor beam projector, 4 turbolaser batteries and 2 ion cannons. Under Saul Karath's command, the Leviathan housed two squadrons of Sith fighters.

Malak, in the Leviathan, brought a fleet of Interdictors to Taris and positioned them around that world in an attempt to stop the Jedi Knight Bastila Shan from escaping. Frustrated that the search for the missing Jedi was taking too long, he ordered his fleet to bombard Taris with their turbolasers.

Some time later, a number of Interdictors participated in the Battle of Rakata Prime, which bore witness to the destruction of the Star Forge and the mass production of Interdictor-class ships and Sith fighters. The Leviathan was likely destroyed during the battle of Rakata Prime, as its computers listed the Star Forge as its destination when Revan sliced the systems to enable the Ebon Hawk to escape. Despite that, many of the remaining Interdictor-class Cruisers were later used to form the core of Darth Nihilus's Sith battlefleet and were seen in action at the Battle of Telos IV.

The Republic abandoned the design of the "proto-Star Destroyers" after the loss of the Leviathan, the Ravager, and many other ships of the Sith Empire. Also possibly due to lack of resources, they instead used capital ships more aesthetically in line with the peaceful ages of the Republic, such as the Endar Spire.

A millennia later, the overall design principles would survive and be reborn in the form of the Star Destroyer line of warships for the Galactic Empire. Sienar, known under the Empire as Sienar Fleet Systems, would go on to make the Immobilizer 418 cruiser, equipped with a superior form of gravity well projector.
